THE ONE FROM ABOVE

In John 3:31, we read that, “He who comes from above is above all.” While this short sentence may seem pretty elementary, it is quite profound. Of course, it is speaking of Jesus—He is the One from above, and subsequently, the One who is above all. But what does this mean when we pan out and consider it in light of Scripture?

First, we see that Jesus is the only one who has descended from heaven (Jn 3:13). He is not from this world (Jn 8:23). In other words, He is not like us. He is something, or rather someone, much greater. This is the point. There have been men who have ascended to heaven, such as Enoch & Elijah. But only one has descended from heaven, the Son of God, born of the virgin Mary, putting on human flesh to become the God-man, the One from above, fully God and fully human.

Second, because He is from above, He is above all. In other words, He rules over all things in both heaven and earth (Mt 28:18). The implications of this are many. We learn from John chapter 3 that the Father loves Jesus, that He must increase, that He utters the very words of God, and that it is belief in Him which determines one’s future and eternal state in heaven or hell. All these things are true because He is the One from above.

So, how are we to respond to such news? To start, we ought to recognize His superior and exalted status. Then, in light of this, we ought to humbly seek what it means to believe in Him. How are we to do this? We must go to the Word of God. Only through the Word can we begin to grow in our understanding and knowledge of the Exalted One, the Lord Jesus Christ—the One from above.

In this, the words of the prophet Jeremiah will ring true: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jer 29:13). It is not God’s intent to remain hidden, so much so that He has revealed Himself in the person and work of the Son, the Lord Jesus. So, seek Him today and know that the One from above, who is above all, will gladly reveal Himself to you when you pursue Him with all your heart!
